The Roman Hemby pick is the one that will follow the 49ers into the fall. They took him 134 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so.
The Lew pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
They liked Derrick Moore enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 2 slot. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A wild overpay on Elijah Sarratt in pick No. 58, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Treydan Stukes in Round 3, Pick 14 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Connor Lew at the 113th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jack Endries at the 127th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They reached a country mile for Aamil Wagner at slot 138, and the board is aghast. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A straight-up fair deal on Chris McClellan at No. 139, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They reached into another round for Roman Hemby, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A big swing on Micah Morris at pick 254, well ahead of any board in the building. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
