A solid, sensible weekend for the Cowboys: B.

The Braelon Allen selection is the head-turner. The Cowboys reached 24 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. No fireworks, but a solid B.

However the rest shakes out, Proctor at that price is a win they earned. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.2 · Pick 34 · Xavier Legette · WR · rank 36
No edge and no loss on Xavier Legette in slot 34; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R2.7 · Pick 39 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 56
A premium they did not need to pay, Edgerrin Cooper a notch or two before his time. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.24 · Pick 56 · Jonathon Brooks · RB · rank 61
No drama and no debate, Jonathon Brooks went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.24 · Pick 87 · Josh Newton · CB · rank 82
Josh Newton at Round 3, Pick 24 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Beaux Limmer · C · rank 144
This one needs a full-page explanation: Beaux Limmer in the 125th overall pick, miles early. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.35 · Pick 135 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 159
A wild overpay on Braelon Allen in No. 135, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R4.36 · Pick 136 · Cam Hart · CB · rank 139
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cam Hart. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R5.37 · Pick 173 · Andrew Coker · OL · rank 184
A conviction pick on Andrew Coker at the Round 5 slot that the board grades a round light. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.33 · Pick 208 · Josh Proctor · S · rank 197
Josh Proctor at pick No. 208 is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R6.38 · Pick 213 · Isaiah Williams · WR · rank 209
A clean, defensible pick in slot 213 with a little surplus value in Isaiah Williams. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R7.22 · Pick 242 · Darius Muasau · LB · rank 238
Darius Muasau at pick 242 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
