You build a draft on nights like this. Ryan Fitzgerald had no business being available in the 256th overall pick, and the Chiefs did the only sane thing and turned in the card. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
The cost of the Bryant reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend.
The Chiefs indulged a want in Watts while a need in wide receiver, tight end and other spots stayed open. The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 31st overall pick they get a cornerstone up front, even if it was a touch early. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Nick Emmanwori in pick 41, plain and simple. A minor itch, scratched.
They went early on Tate Ratledge in No. 66, and the value did not follow. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 95th pick on Xavier Watts with wide receiver, tight end and other spots unsolved.
A wild overpay on Cobee Bryant in Round 4, Pick 32, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They robbed the room for Quinshon Judkins here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A running back of that caliber at pick No. 195 is the definition of value, full stop. It fills a real need, too.
They will replay Ryan Fitzgerald at slot 256 for years; that is how good the value is. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
