Dallas Cowboys

Howard should have been long gone. The Cowboys pounced, and earned a B.

The Cowboys did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Will Howard fell into pick No. 158. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.

That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. The offense got the lion's share of the attention.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.12 · Pick 12 · Ashton Jeanty · RB · rank 2
In the Round 1 slot they get a lead back with juice, outstanding value to boot.
R2.12 · Pick 44 · Jalon Walker · LB · rank 20
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jalon Walker in pick 44, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · Tre Harris · WR · rank 48
Circle this one: Tre Harris at the 76th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.19 · Pick 158 · Will Howard · QB · rank 108
The board fumbled Will Howard all the way to pick No. 158, and they scooped it up. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.31 · Pick 170 · Logan Brown · OT · rank 158
The board had Logan Brown higher than the 170th pick, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.33 · Pick 172 · Pat Bryant · WR · rank 147
Taking Pat Bryant in Round 5, Pick 33 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.35 · Pick 174 · Simeon Barrow Jr. · DL · rank 180
No edge and no loss on Simeon Barrow Jr. in No. 174; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
R6.12 · Pick 190 · JJ Pegues · DT · rank 187
JJ Pegues in slot 190 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R6.33 · Pick 211 · Jaylen Reed · S · rank 188
They barely believed it either: Jaylen Reed still on the board at pick No. 211. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R7.19 · Pick 237 · Jacob Parrish · CB · rank 223
Jacob Parrish is a better player than No. 237 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.31 · Pick 249 · Cam Horsley · DT · rank 222
Cam Horsley at the 249th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
