The Packers spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: De'Corian Clark, the No. 214 name on the board, in the Round 7 slot. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. Every board in the league had Speights lower, and that gap is the story.
They will answer for taking safety early while quarterback, tight end and other spots went begging. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.25
· Pick 25
· Quinyon Mitchell
· CB
· rank 30
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Quinyon Mitchell. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R2.9
· Pick 41
· Kris Jenkins
· DL-EDGE
· rank 43
They paid sticker price for Kris Jenkins in the 41st overall pick, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.26
· Pick 58
· Kingsley Suamataia
· OT
· rank 53
A clean, defensible pick in Round 2, Pick 26 with a little surplus value in Kingsley Suamataia. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.25
· Pick 88
· Zak Zinter
· OG
· rank 94
Zak Zinter in slot 88 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.32
· Pick 95
· Jaden Hicks
· S
· rank 107
A reach on Jaden Hicks in pick 95; the board had better options right there. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R4.27
· Pick 127
· Cole Bishop
· S
· rank 130
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Cole Bishop adds a safety and leaves quarterback, tight end and other spots untouched.
R5.32
· Pick 168
· Braelon Allen
· RB
· rank 159
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Braelon Allen in the Round 5 slot. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R6.29
· Pick 204
· Omar Speights
· LB
· rank 222
A real head-scratcher, Omar Speights in the 204th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R6.41
· Pick 216
· Tanor Bortolini
· C
· rank 229
A premium they did not need to pay, Tanor Bortolini a notch or two before his time. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.23
· Pick 243
· Darius Muasau
· LB
· rank 244
A straight-up fair deal on Darius Muasau at pick No. 243, value and slot in agreement. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
R7.31
· Pick 251
· De'Corian Clark
· WR
· rank 214
De'Corian Clark in No. 251 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It fills a real need, too.
