New England Patriots

The Patriots bet the future on Williams. The board says B.

Future A

The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Caleb Williams, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.

The Corley pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.

Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.3 · Pick 3 · Caleb Williams · QB · rank 2
In the 3rd overall pick they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value. A real need, handled.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 53
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Kingsley Suamataia at the 68th pick is the proof. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R4.4 · Pick 104 · Malachi Corley · WR · rank 76
Malachi Corley at the Round 4 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.29 · Pick 129 · Kris Abrams-Draine · CB · rank 122
Fair-plus on Kris Abrams-Draine, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A minor itch, scratched.
R4.36 · Pick 136 · Jaheim Bell · TE · rank 141
By-the-book stuff, Jaheim Bell at No. 136 squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
R6.7 · Pick 182 · Grayson Murphy · DL-EDGE · rank 174
Grayson Murphy in Round 6, Pick 7 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
