The Packers did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-.

Some picks age like wine; Cedric Johnson at Round 6, Pick 27 will need to, sitting 25 spots clear of his grade. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.

The Wilson pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback, running back and other spots still on the board. They banked enough surplus on Melton to cover a lot of smaller sins. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.

Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.25 · Pick 25 · Cooper DeJean · CB · rank 26
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a potential shutdown corner. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 49
They jumped the gun on Edgerrin Cooper, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R2.26 · Pick 58 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 57
A want over a need in slot 58: Payton Wilson adds a linebacker while quarterback, running back and other spots keeps waiting.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Max Melton · CB · rank 76
A quiet steal in the 88th overall pick: Max Melton for less than the market said. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Dadrion Taylor-Demerson · S · rank 86
They did well to land Dadrion Taylor-Demerson in the 91st pick, just ahead of his grade. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R4.26 · Pick 126 · Javon Foster · OT · rank 119
Javon Foster at the Round 4 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.33 · Pick 169 · Tanor Bortolini · C · rank 187
A real head-scratcher, Tanor Bortolini in the 169th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
R6.27 · Pick 202 · Cedric Johnson · DE-EDGE · rank 227
They reached a country mile for Cedric Johnson at the Round 6 slot, and the board is aghast. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R6.44 · Pick 219 · Tylan Grable · OT · rank 231
The board had cheaper options than Tylan Grable at pick 219, and it noticed. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.25 · Pick 245 · Trevin Wallace · LB · rank 233
A tidy bit of business in the 245th overall pick, where Trevin Wallace graded well above the range. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
R7.35 · Pick 255 · Josh Proctor · S · rank 244
Josh Proctor at No. 255 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
