Call it larceny. Jake Slaughter sat on the board until pick No. 126, and the Dolphins did not need to be asked twice.
They will need Randall to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own. On the needs board they went 8 of 8, with quarterback the one that mattered most.
It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
The board fumbled Arvell Reese all the way to pick 48, and they scooped it up. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They jumped the gun on Dani Dennis-Sutton, taking him earlier than his grade liked. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jake Golday at Round 3, Pick 11. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They robbed the room for Brandon Cisse here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Eli Stowers at the Round 3 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Taking Keionte Scott in slot 106 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Jalen Farmer in pick No. 108 lands just on the right side of the ledger. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Devin Moore at No. 113 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Jake Slaughter in pick No. 126 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A need, and now a little less of one.
No edge and no loss on DeMonte Capehart in the 130th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They read the board right and Oscar Delp was the payoff at the 141st overall pick. It fills a real need, too.
They paid up for Demond Claiborne at No. 147 when waiting would have done the job. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Charles Demmings. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Domani Jackson in slot 168 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Jeff Caldwell in Round 6, Pick 6 is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They will replay Taylen Green at pick 215 for years; that is how good the value is. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Eli Heidenreich at the Round 7 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Adam Randall at No. 231 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
J. Michael Sturdivant at pick No. 238 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
