You can hear the double-takes from here. The Dolphins took Eric Gentry at the Round 6 slot, roughly 142 spots before his name belonged. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
The Golday pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.
The Stukes pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman. They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 11 they get the heartbeat of the defense. A clean fit for the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 30 they get a plug-and-play piece up front, even if it was a touch early. A real need, handled.
Keionte Scott at the 87th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Circle this one: Mike Washington Jr. at pick No. 90 is a fall that decides a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A top-tier edge rusher at a bargain, Jake Golday in pick 92, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Treydan Stukes at cornerback with interior defensive lineman open.
Connor Lew at the 112th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The roster fit checks out.
They will replay Zakee Wheatley at the 113th pick for years; that is how good the value is. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Ja'Kobi Lane in Round 4, Pick 16. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Michael Trigg at No. 128. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They jumped the gun on Isaiah World, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Fair-plus on Dametrious Crownover, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Drew Allar at slot 152 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A real head-scratcher, Taylen Green in pick 165 is miles ahead of his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Tanner Koziol slipping to slot 177 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It fills a real need, too.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Caleb Douglas at the 182nd overall pick is the proof. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Eric Gentry in pick 213, miles early. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Eli Heidenreich at No. 220 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Colbie Young. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Micah Morris at the 238th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A need, and now a little less of one.
