You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Dolphins did exactly that with Eric Gentry in slot 257. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
Slaughter falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The Dolphins clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
Omar Cooper Jr. is a better player than No. 46 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A premium they did not need to pay, Malachi Lawrence a notch or two before his time. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Dani Dennis-Sutton this early at pick 49. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Keionte Scott at slot 75 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They paid up for Ted Hurst at the 77th pick when waiting would have done the job. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They will replay Jake Slaughter at pick No. 87 for years; that is how good the value is. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Michael Trigg at pick 91 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A real head-scratcher, Isaiah World in No. 126 is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Drew Allar at the Round 4 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Travis Burke at the 151st overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The roster fit checks out.
They talked themselves into Jeff Caldwell at the 163rd pick, and the board did not agree. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Tanner Koziol at slot 168 squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 182 with a little surplus value in Domani Jackson. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
No edge and no loss on Ephesians Prysock in Round 6, Pick 7; it is a wash and a sensible one. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
A conviction pick on Jaren Kanak at Round 7, Pick 11 that the board grades a round light. It fills a real need, too.
No drama and no debate, Robert Spears-Jennings went about where he belonged in pick 238. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Lander Barton at pick No. 246 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Eli Heidenreich in No. 256 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They reached into another round for Eric Gentry, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
