Boards are made to be trusted, and the Dolphins shredded theirs for Eric Gentry. He came off 105 spots early, and the room will hear about it. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
However the rest shakes out, Scott at that price is a win they earned. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. Spending an early pick on cornerback with edge rusher open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 11 they get a bell-cow for the offense at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
In No. 30 they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Jacob Rodriguez at the 58th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. It fills a real need, too.
Somehow Chase Bisontis was still sitting there in slot 80, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They robbed the room for Keionte Scott here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They will replay Keylan Rutledge at the 94th pick for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
Ja'Kobi Lane slipping to pick No. 111 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A want over a need in Round 4, Pick 15: Jalon Kilgore adds a cornerback while edge rusher keeps waiting.
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Oscar Delp. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They liked Dametrious Crownover enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 130. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Joe Royer at the Round 4 slot is the proof. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Drew Allar at the 147th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Charles Demmings at the 151st overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
No edge and no loss on Zxavian Harris in slot 155; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Domani Jackson at pick No. 187 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Taking Jeff Caldwell in the 218th pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board had cheaper options than Jaren Kanak at Round 7, Pick 11, and it noticed. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Robert Spears-Jennings at the 238th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Eli Heidenreich in slot 246 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Eric Gentry in the Round 7 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
