The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Dolphins reached some 114 spots for Eric Gentry, and value like that does not grow back.
Landing Slaughter that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 30 they get a plug-and-play piece up front, even if it was a touch early.
Taking Jake Slaughter in the 112th overall pick is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
No drama and no debate, Michael Trigg went about where he belonged in Round 4, Pick 13. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Value said wait; Drew Allar in the 130th pick says they were not listening. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Taylen Green well ahead of where he belonged. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Dametrious Crownover at pick 151 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A need, and now a little less of one.
A clean, defensible pick in the 152nd overall pick with a little surplus value in Isaiah World. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Zxavian Harris at the Round 5 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Demond Claiborne in Round 5, Pick 29. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They talked themselves into Jeff Caldwell at slot 170, and the board did not agree. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Domani Jackson in pick No. 176 is fair value, right on his grade. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Ephesians Prysock at pick 182 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, VJ Payne at the 207th pick. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Dallen Bentley in No. 218 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The roster fit checks out.
Robert Spears-Jennings in slot 220 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
No edge and no loss on John Michael Gyllenborg in the Round 7 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Eric Gentry at the 238th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It fills a real need, too.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Adam Randall in No. 250, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for J. Michael Sturdivant. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They reached into another round for Shamar Easter, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
