Call it larceny. Cam Skattebo sat on the board until pick No. 205, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
They will need Dellinger to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 14 they get a blindside protector. A real need, handled.
They took Jihaad Campbell at par in the 38th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A minor itch, scratched.
No drama and no debate, Matthew Golden went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
By-the-book stuff, Andrew Mukuba at pick No. 69 squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They robbed the room for TreVeyon Henderson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They barely believed it either: Gunnar Helm still on the board at Round 4, Pick 3. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Danny Stutsman in the 143rd pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
They will replay Cody Simon at slot 189 for years; that is how good the value is. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Somehow Cam Skattebo was still sitting there in the Round 6 slot, and they pounced on premier running back value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Garrett Dellinger. The roster fit checks out.
Taking Rod Moore in pick No. 220 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A tight end of that caliber at pick 238 is the definition of value, full stop. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
