Future A

The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Michael Penix Jr., and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. It holds up to a second look, which is why it earns the A-.

They will need Barrett to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast.

They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. Landing Jones that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.

Bottom line, they left the weekend a clearly better team, and they earned every bit of it.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.15 · Pick 15 · Michael Penix Jr. · QB · rank 9
In No. 15 they get the arm they will build around. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Xavier Legette · WR · rank 38
No edge and no loss on Xavier Legette in slot 34; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.11 · Pick 43 · Ja'Tavion Sanders · TE · rank 36
Ja'Tavion Sanders in pick No. 43 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R2.15 · Pick 47 · Tyler Nubin · S · rank 40
A tidy little value on Tyler Nubin in the 47th overall pick, a step better than break-even. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R2.21 · Pick 53 · Junior Colson · LB · rank 52
No drama and no debate, Junior Colson went about where he belonged in Round 2, Pick 21. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Brenden Rice · WR · rank 96
A real head-scratcher, Brenden Rice in pick 68 is miles ahead of his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Javon Foster · OT · rank 119
They jumped the gun on Javon Foster, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Dylan Laube · RB · rank 157
A wild overpay on Dylan Laube in the Round 5 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The roster fit checks out.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Jordan Jefferson · DT · rank 185
By-the-book stuff, Jordan Jefferson at pick No. 180 squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.16 · Pick 191 · Michael Barrett · LB · rank 235
Value said wait; Michael Barrett in No. 191 says they were not listening. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
R6.18 · Pick 193 · Kendall Milton · RB · rank 202
The board had cheaper options than Kendall Milton at the Round 6 slot, and it noticed. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Sheridan Jones · CB · rank 219
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Sheridan Jones at slot 231 is the proof. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
