If confidence were a draft strategy, the Commanders would have aced it. Anim Dankwah at the Round 6 slot is 56 spots clear of where he belonged. Little went right, and the F does not pretend otherwise.
Bo Nix gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up.
Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers. Gray falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
There is no soft landing here; this class has to massively overperform just to matter.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 10th pick they get a disruptor off the edge at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
In slot 19 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In No. 28 they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
A wild overpay on Zach Frazier in the 36th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They let Edgerrin Cooper come to them and pounced at Round 2, Pick 20. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Ben Sinnott in pick No. 83 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They read the board right and Gabriel Murphy was the payoff at No. 94. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Zak Zinter. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Theo Johnson at pick 103 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Cedric Gray slid further than he should have, and pick No. 138 is lovely value for the linebacker. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Joe Milton III in the Round 6 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They reached into another round for Anim Dankwah, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
