The Commanders spent the pick that matters most on Michael Penix Jr., and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. The board rewarded a patient, disciplined weekend with a A-.
Sinnott has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. On value alone, Carson makes the weekend a net positive.
The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Michael Penix Jr. and all.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Tyler Guyton at pick 36 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Payton Wilson. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Adisa Isaac at No. 67 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It fills a real need, too.
They reached into another round for Ben Sinnott, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Good price on Christian Mahogany in slot 103, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They barely believed it either: Caelen Carson still on the board at the 124th pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
James Williams slipping to pick No. 128 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Dylan Laube in the Round 5 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A need, and now a little less of one.
Roger Rosengarten at Round 5, Pick 9 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They read the board right and Luke McCaffrey was the payoff at the 181st pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
You do not let a cornerback like Elijah Jones reach pick 220 and blink. They did not. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
