The Vikings put a flag in the ground for Deven Eastern, 37 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Slaughter. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
They reloaded the coverage unit in bulk.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 18 they get a centerfielder for the defense, though they paid up to get him. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A straight-up fair deal on Lee Hunter at the 49th pick, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Taking Jake Slaughter in pick No. 82 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Nothing to complain about; Bryce Lance went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It fills a real need, too.
They paid sticker price for Demond Claiborne in pick 163, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Somehow Domani Jackson was still sitting there in the 196th overall pick, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Steal is underselling it; Keyshaun Elliott at No. 234 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Josh Moten in the Round 7 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Deven Eastern in slot 244, miles early. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
