Somebody in No. 84 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Packers sat still while A.J. Haulcy, the No. 49 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Elarms-Orr reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with cornerback the one that mattered most.
The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
They let Anthony Hill Jr. come to them and pounced at Round 2, Pick 20. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A.J. Haulcy in the 84th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Fair-plus on Mike Washington Jr., a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid up for Kaleb Elarms-Orr at the Round 5 slot when waiting would have done the job. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Jeff Caldwell in the 201st pick, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A tidy bit of business in slot 236, where Charles Demmings graded well above the range. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They took Jalon Daniels at par in pick 255, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
