Washington Commanders

The Commanders left with their quarterback, and a B to match.

Start where it matters. The Commanders took Drake Maye to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. No fireworks, but a solid B.

Landing Gould that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.

If Ford pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.

Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.3 · Pick 3 · Drake Maye · QB · rank 5
In the Round 1 slot they get their quarterback of the future. A real need, handled.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Tyler Guyton · OT · rank 27
A tidy little value on Tyler Guyton in pick No. 34, a step better than break-even. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Chris Braswell · LB-EDGE · rank 41
Chris Braswell in pick 36 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 42
They paid sticker price for Edgerrin Cooper in the 40th overall pick, and that is fine. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Christian Haynes · OG · rank 62
They did well to land Christian Haynes in the 67th pick, just ahead of his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R4.1 · Pick 101 · Will Shipley · RB · rank 108
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Will Shipley. The roster fit checks out.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Zak Zinter · OG · rank 104
They took Zak Zinter at par in Round 4, Pick 3, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.4 · Pick 104 · Kris Abrams-Draine · CB · rank 78
They barely believed it either: Kris Abrams-Draine still on the board at No. 104. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R5.2 · Pick 138 · Ben Sinnott · TE · rank 132
Ben Sinnott at the 138th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R6.6 · Pick 181 · Jaylan Ford · LB · rank 196
Jaylan Ford at pick No. 181 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
R6.45 · Pick 220 · Anthony Gould · WR · rank 166
Anthony Gould in Round 6, Pick 45 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
