The tape said wait; the Patriots did not. Jarquez Hunter went at pick 235, a good 118 picks before the board was ready. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
The Slaughter pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 3 they get a No. 1 receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Tyler Warren at No. 41 squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
Ozzy Trapilo at pick 70 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Sonny Styles in the 80th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jake Majors is a better player than pick No. 106 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
They barely believed it either: Nicholas Singleton still on the board at the Round 5 slot. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Circle this one: Jake Slaughter at slot 221 is a fall that decides a draft. It fills a real need, too.
Savion Williams at pick 223 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They reached into another round for Jarquez Hunter, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A premium they did not need to pay, Luke Lachey a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
