The board owed the Cowboys one, and it paid up: Kyle McCord, the No. 120 name on the board, sitting there at Round 5, Pick 36 like a gift left on the doorstep.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. The veteran additions, Vita Vea chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
The skill positions did well by the weekend.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 17th pick they get a home-run threat at receiver, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Tre Harris at slot 49 squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No drama and no debate, TreVeyon Henderson went about where he belonged in pick No. 53. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They barely believed it either: Alfred Collins still on the board at the 76th overall pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Barrett Carter at pick 119 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They robbed the room for Smael Mondon Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A quiet steal in Round 5, Pick 34: Chase Lundt for less than the market said. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They will replay Kyle McCord at No. 174 for years; that is how good the value is. It fills a real need, too.
Value with a capital V on Ajani Cornelius in the Round 6 slot, a genuine coup. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jake Briningstool at No. 188 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jay Higgins in pick 211 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Taking Quincy Riley in slot 216 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Craig Woodson in Round 7, Pick 18 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Somehow Ricky White III was still sitting there in pick No. 247, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
