The rest of the league will want that one back. Nicholas Singleton tumbling to the Patriots in the Round 7 slot is a gift they did not have to think twice about. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C- in the wash.
They are betting Wilson proves the room right and everyone else wrong. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. It is not that Campbell is a bad player; it is that the Patriots had louder needs to answer first.
A perfectly average weekend, for better and for worse.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.25
· Pick 25
· Luther Burden III
· WR
· rank 20
Nothing to complain about; Luther Burden III went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R2.13
· Pick 45
· Jalon Walker
· LB
· rank 25
They will replay Jalon Walker at the 45th pick for years; that is how good the value is. A minor itch, scratched.
R2.23
· Pick 55
· Tyler Warren
· TE
· rank 44
They read the board right and Tyler Warren was the payoff at pick 55. The roster fit checks out.
R3.5
· Pick 69
· Jihaad Campbell
· LB
· rank 40
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending Round 3, Pick 5 on Jihaad Campbell with edge rusher and quarterback unsolved.
R3.13
· Pick 77
· Sebastian Castro
· S
· rank 87
A conviction pick on Sebastian Castro at the Round 3 slot that the board grades a round light. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.18
· Pick 82
· Maxwell Hairston
· CB
· rank 97
Maxwell Hairston in No. 82 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R5.6
· Pick 143
· Jared Wilson
· C
· rank 211
They talked themselves into Jared Wilson at pick No. 143, and the board did not agree. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.1
· Pick 217
· Lander Barton
· LB
· rank 128
They barely believed it either: Lander Barton still on the board at the 217th overall pick. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
R7.4
· Pick 220
· Nicholas Singleton
· RB
· rank 99
Nicholas Singleton in slot 220 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R7.16
· Pick 232
· Tim Smith
· DL
· rank 297
Value said wait; Tim Smith in Round 7, Pick 16 says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R7.25
· Pick 241
· Javontez Spraggins
· OG
· rank 282
Javontez Spraggins in the 241st pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
