The Commanders went off the board in a big way for Xavier Thomas, 56 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. Put together, it is a D.
The whole projection now runs through Jayden Daniels; hit there and everything else looks smarter. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.
They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it. They will answer for taking linebacker early while tight end, running back and other spots went begging.
Landing Milton III that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 6 they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value.
In No. 7 they get a true top target at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Value with a capital V on Amarius Mims in the Round 2 slot, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They read the board right and Brian Thomas Jr. was the payoff at slot 40. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jordan Morgan at the 47th pick is the proof. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board had T.J. Tampa higher than the 67th overall pick, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Nice patience on Payton Wilson, who had no business lasting to the Round 3 slot. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in slot 78 leaves tight end, running back and other spots for later.
Justin Eboigbe at pick 100 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They talked themselves into Xavier Thomas at Round 4, Pick 6, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
They did well to land Roger Rosengarten in pick No. 139, just ahead of his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They robbed the room for Chau Smith-Wade here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Tommy Eichenberg in No. 152 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Taking Joe Milton III in the 222nd overall pick is close to grand larceny; a quarterback that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
