You build a draft on nights like this. Myles Harden had no business being available in No. 233, and the Cowboys did the only sane thing and turned in the card. It nets out a thoroughly average C+.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They are betting Benson proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
A perfectly average weekend, for better and for worse.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 24 they get a cornerstone up front, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A conviction pick on Trey Benson at the 56th overall pick that the board grades a round light. A need, and now a little less of one.
Taking Kris Jenkins in Round 3, Pick 4 is close to grand larceny; an edge rusher that good had no business lasting this long. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They took Sedrick Van Pran at par in pick No. 87, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jalyx Hunt in the Round 5 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Jordan Magee at pick 216 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Circle this one: Myles Harden at the 233rd pick is a fall that decides a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jordan Whittington at slot 244 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
