The Cowboys treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending the Round 6 slot on Phillip Webb a full 114 spots early. It bottoms out at a F.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Landing Dotson that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
On the needs board they went 8 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Bottom line, it will take a lot of luck to make this look better later.
Pick-by-Pick
A slide stopped in slot 33, with Jalon Walker worth more than the price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Emeka Egbuka at the 36th pick is the proof. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Walter Nolen at the Round 2 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A reach for Dylan Sampson in pick 44; a little patience would have been rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Tate Ratledge in Round 2, Pick 19, miles early. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Azareye'h Thomas is a better player than No. 67 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jalen Milroe at Round 3, Pick 6 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Ashton Gillotte in the Round 3 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Mason Taylor in the 82nd pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
No edge and no loss on Andrew Mukuba in pick No. 85; it is a wash and a sensible one. A minor itch, scratched.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Ozzy Trapilo in No. 94. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A quiet steal in the 113th overall pick: Jaylin Noel for less than the market said. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They went early on Cody Simon in pick 121, and the value did not follow. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid sticker price for Bhayshul Tuten in slot 150, and that is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
They will replay Mello Dotson at No. 170 for years; that is how good the value is. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid up for Alex Mastromanno at pick 199 when waiting would have done the job. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Phillip Webb at the 210th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Clay Webb in pick No. 211 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Value said wait; Thor Griffith in the 236th pick says they were not listening. The roster fit checks out.
Maxen Hook in Round 7, Pick 31 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
