The tape said wait; the Cowboys did not. DeMonte Capehart went at the 242nd pick, a good 150 picks before the board was ready. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. The Coleman value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. The Cowboys paired the rookies with proven help, Danielle Hunter leading the way.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th overall pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They barely believed it either: Keon Coleman still on the board at pick 64. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They went early on Trey Benson in the Round 3 slot, and the value did not follow. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No drama and no debate, Brenden Rice went about where he belonged in the 95th pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A wild overpay on Tommy Eichenberg in Round 4, Pick 24, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jaylan Ford at slot 173 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Taking Daequan Hardy in No. 213 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Edefuan Ulofoshio in the 231st overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, DeMonte Capehart well ahead of where he belonged. A need, and now a little less of one.
