Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the 49ers were there to profit. Ted Hurst, the No. 88 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 127th overall pick. Call it a C+ and check back in two years.
Reaching for Prysock left real value on the table behind him. That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move.
So much rides on Joshua Josephs that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 27 they get a disruptor off the edge, a steep price for the projection.
Somehow A.J. Haulcy was still sitting there in the 77th overall pick, and they pounced on premier safety value. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They did well to land Keylan Rutledge in the 85th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
By-the-book stuff, Bryce Lance at No. 93 squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They will replay Ted Hurst at the 127th pick for years; that is how good the value is. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Trey Zuhn III in pick No. 133 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Drew Allar at pick 147 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It fills a real need, too.
A real head-scratcher, Ephesians Prysock in slot 152 is miles ahead of his ranking. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Matt Gulbin. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 6 slot with a little surplus value in Dallen Bentley. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
