There is reaching, and then there is Matt Gulbin at the 139th pick. The 49ers jumped the board by 43 and dared it to prove them wrong. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.

That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast.

Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.3 · Pick 35 · Malachi Lawrence · DE-EDGE · rank 55
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Malachi Lawrence. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R2.26 · Pick 58 · Gennings Dunker · OG · rank 51
Gennings Dunker at pick No. 58 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R2.28 · Pick 60 · A.J. Haulcy · S · rank 50
A.J. Haulcy at the 60th overall pick is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R4.6 · Pick 106 · Elijah Sarratt · WR · rank 77
Elijah Sarratt at the 106th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.33 · Pick 133 · Jalon Kilgore · CB · rank 104
Jalon Kilgore at No. 133 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R4.38 · Pick 138 · Kaytron Allen · RB · rank 149
They liked Kaytron Allen enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 138. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.39 · Pick 139 · Matt Gulbin · C · rank 182
Matt Gulbin at the 139th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R5.28 · Pick 168 · Kaleb Elarms-Orr · LB · rank 181
Kaleb Elarms-Orr at pick 168 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.37 · Pick 177 · Ephesians Prysock · CB · rank 192
Ephesians Prysock at slot 177 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
R5.40 · Pick 180 · VJ Payne · S · rank 200
VJ Payne at Round 5, Pick 40 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
R6.28 · Pick 209 · Dallen Bentley · TE · rank 205
Dallen Bentley at the 209th pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
