You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The 49ers did exactly that with Eli Heidenreich in slot 176. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. The Price pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 29 they get a two-high chess piece. Need was not the driver here.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Jadarian Price in the Round 3 slot, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Keylan Rutledge at the 109th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Steal is underselling it; Bryce Lance at pick No. 112 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A big swing on Zxavian Harris at pick 127, well ahead of any board in the building. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Justin Joly at Round 4, Pick 33. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
George Gumbs Jr. in No. 138 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A wild overpay on Matt Gulbin in pick No. 139, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
CJ Daniels in pick 148 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A real head-scratcher, Nadame Tucker in the 152nd overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Eli Heidenreich at the 176th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
