After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Commanders committed. Caleb Williams is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline.
Rosengarten has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The Devonshire pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 2 they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value.
Good price on Adonai Mitchell in pick 36, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A tidy little value on Jordan Morgan in the 40th overall pick, a step better than break-even. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
T.J. Tampa is a better player than Round 3, Pick 3 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They paid sticker price for Austin Booker in the 78th pick, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Roger Rosengarten at No. 100 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Mason McCormick at slot 139 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Nothing to complain about; Tommy Eichenberg went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
M.J. Devonshire in pick 222 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
