The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Drake Maye, and the whole operation now runs on his development. Call it a sensible B+, earned the boring way.
Gore Jr. has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend.
However the rest shakes out, Colby at that price is a win they earned. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th overall pick they get the arm they will build around at fair value. A real need, handled.
Rome Odunze in pick No. 34 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Kris Abrams-Draine in the Round 2 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They took Troy Fautanu at par in slot 37, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
No edge and no loss on Ja'Lynn Polk in No. 66; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jackson Powers-Johnson at pick 68 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It fills a real need, too.
A slide stopped in Round 4, Pick 2, with Christian Mahogany worth more than the price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Gabriel Murphy slipping to the 139th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Taking Connor Colby in the Round 6 slot is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Frank Gore Jr. in pick No. 223 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The roster fit checks out.
