There is conviction, and then there is this. The Cowboys took Tyreak Sapp a full 196 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C+ in the wash.
However the rest shakes out, Perkins Jr. at that price is a win they earned. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
A perfectly average weekend, for better and for worse.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 19 they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher. A clean fit for the roster.
Taking Omarion Hampton in slot 45 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They robbed the room for Jihaad Campbell here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Circle this one: Alfred Collins at the 81st pick is a fall that decides a draft. The roster fit checks out.
Tyreak Sapp in pick No. 84 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Kevin Winston Jr. at pick 117 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It adds depth where they could use a little.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Jake Majors reach pick 151 and blink. They did not. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at the 152nd overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Lathan Ransom in slot 156 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Steal is underselling it; Jay Higgins at pick No. 168 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They will replay Tahj Brooks at Round 5, Pick 32 for years; that is how good the value is. It fills a real need, too.
They talked themselves into Miles Frazier at No. 171, and the board did not agree. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Harold Perkins Jr. at the Round 6 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Cobee Bryant at the 197th pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Thor Griffith in Round 6, Pick 34, miles early. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Micah Morris. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They reached into another round for Trey Wedig, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Value said wait; Omari Thomas in the 240th overall pick says they were not listening. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Shilo Sanders in the 244th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Jared Wilson in pick No. 248 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
