The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
They are betting Limmer proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.
However the rest shakes out, Amegadjie at that price is a win they earned. The Stover pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher and interior defensive lineman still on the board.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.4
· Pick 4
· Drake Maye
· QB
· rank 5
In the 4th overall pick they get their quarterback of the future. A real need, handled.
R1.27
· Pick 27
· Kool-Aid McKinstry
· CB
· rank 19
In pick No. 27 they get a potential shutdown corner, outstanding value to boot. Need was not the driver here.
R2.2
· Pick 34
· Patrick Paul
· OT
· rank 47
Patrick Paul at the 34th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R2.31
· Pick 63
· Ja'Lynn Polk
· WR
· rank 55
They read the board right and Ja'Lynn Polk was the payoff at No. 63. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.4
· Pick 68
· Cade Stover
· TE-EDGE
· rank 94
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Cade Stover at TE-EDGE with edge rusher and interior defensive lineman open.
R3.18
· Pick 82
· Kiran Amegadjie
· OT
· rank 52
Kiran Amegadjie in the Round 3 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.35
· Pick 98
· Roman Wilson
· WR
· rank 82
A quiet steal in slot 98: Roman Wilson for less than the market said. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.3
· Pick 103
· Beaux Limmer
· C
· rank 144
They reached into another round for Beaux Limmer, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.3
· Pick 139
· Kitan Oladapo
· S
· rank 166
Kitan Oladapo at pick No. 139 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R6.7
· Pick 182
· Frank Gore Jr.
· RB
· rank 171
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Frank Gore Jr. at No. 182. A need, and now a little less of one.
R7.4
· Pick 224
· Brevyn Spann-Ford
· TE
· rank 224
By-the-book stuff, Brevyn Spann-Ford at the Round 7 slot squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
R7.12
· Pick 232
· Eric Gentry
· LB
· rank 251
Eric Gentry in the 232nd overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A minor need, but a need all the same.
