For all the boxes ticked, the Chargers skipped the loudest one: interior defensive lineman is exactly as bare as it was.
Dixon falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. Keegan has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 5 they get juice off the edge. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 37 with a little surplus value in Ladd McConkey. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No edge and no loss on Blake Corum in pick 69; it is a wash and a sensible one. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Nice patience on Tykee Smith, who had no business lasting to the 105th pick. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Johnny Dixon is a better player than slot 142 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A tidy little value on Jaylan Ford in the 183rd overall pick, a step better than break-even. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Trevor Keegan in the Round 7 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
