Boards are made to be trusted, and the Commanders shredded theirs for VJ Payne. He came off 47 spots early, and the room will hear about it.
The Bell steal is the beam this whole class leans on. Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 22nd pick they get a wrecking ball inside. A clean fit for the roster.
They liked Romello Height enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 55. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A wild overpay on Logan Jones in slot 71, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 96 with a little surplus value in Bryce Lance. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Devin Moore slipping to the Round 4 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Emmett Johnson at the 111th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Taking Skyler Bell in the 123rd pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They left a pile of value on the table to take VJ Payne this early at pick 147. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A straight-up fair deal on Ephesians Prysock at the Round 6 slot, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A quarterback of that caliber at the 204th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. It fills a real need, too.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jadon Canady. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Keyshaun Elliott in No. 223 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A minor need, but a need all the same.
