The Commanders spent real capital to be 28 picks early on Malik Muhammad, and the board is going to hold them to it.
The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 28 they get a weapon on the perimeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Dillon Thieneman at the 38th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Malik Muhammad well ahead of where he belonged. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Demond Claiborne at pick 147 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jeff Caldwell at slot 187 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid sticker price for Bobby Jamison-Travis in the 209th pick, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Bryce Foster in No. 223, miles early. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
