The Commanders clearly saw something nobody else did in Fernando Carmona, taking him 56 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end. The Jones value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Good work on the whole, with tight end the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 24 they get a home-run threat at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
Dillon Thieneman at the 39th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Malik Muhammad at the 71st pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Bryce Lance. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Logan Jones reach slot 112 and blink. They did not. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Beau Stephens at No. 147 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid up for Demond Claiborne at pick No. 152 when waiting would have done the job. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A reach for Aaron Graves in the 187th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
By-the-book stuff, Jadon Canady at No. 209 squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Fernando Carmona at slot 223 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
