The Commanders looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took VJ Payne at pick No. 147 regardless, 49 picks early. It nets out a thoroughly average C.
That Hill Jr. pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
A perfectly average weekend, for better and for worse.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 7 they get a disruptor off the edge. A clean fit for the roster.
A quiet steal in pick 72: Christen Miller for less than the market said. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A linebacker of that caliber at No. 84 is the definition of value, full stop. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
The board fumbled Ted Hurst all the way to the Round 4 slot, and they scooped it up. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Devin Moore in the 120th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Trey Zuhn III at the 121st overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A real head-scratcher, VJ Payne in Round 5, Pick 7 is miles ahead of his ranking. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
The board had Ephesians Prysock higher than slot 200, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A straight-up fair deal on Noah Whittington at the Round 7 slot, value and slot in agreement. A need, and now a little less of one.
