Call it larceny. Domani Jackson sat on the board until the Round 7 slot, and the Commanders did not need to be asked twice. A mixed bag that lands at C-.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Reaching for Whittington left real value on the table behind him.
If Kayden McDonald and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 21 they get an anchor for the defensive front at fair value. A real need, handled.
A tidy bit of business in pick 51, where Dillon Thieneman graded well above the range. A minor itch, scratched.
Malachi Lawrence in the 71st pick is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They took Bryce Lance at par in pick No. 91, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Logan Jones at the Round 3 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A tidy little value on Devin Moore in Round 3, Pick 35, a step better than break-even. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
By-the-book stuff, Harold Perkins Jr. at the 126th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
No drama and no debate, Jeff Caldwell went about where he belonged in slot 187. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board had cheaper options than Noah Whittington at pick No. 209, and it noticed. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Somehow Domani Jackson was still sitting there in No. 223, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
