The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Commanders reached some 49 spots for VJ Payne, and value like that does not grow back. It nets out a thoroughly average C.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
On value alone, World makes the weekend a net positive. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
It nets out as a middle-of-the-pack haul that neither helps nor hurts much.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 18 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Christen Miller in pick No. 49 is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
Connor Lew at Round 3, Pick 7 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A real head-scratcher, Malik Muhammad in slot 72 is miles ahead of his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Fair-plus on Emmett Johnson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They left a pile of value on the table to take VJ Payne this early at pick 147. A minor itch, scratched.
Isaiah World at pick No. 163 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jeff Caldwell at the 187th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jadon Canady in slot 209 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Riley Nowakowski at pick 223 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
