Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Keylan Rutledge got past him. The Commanders do not have to explain a thing at the 108th pick.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end. The Whittington pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 27 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker, outstanding value to boot.
A premium they did not need to pay, Davison Igbinosun a notch or two before his time. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A slide stopped in the 77th overall pick, with Zachariah Branch worth more than the price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at No. 108 is the definition of value, full stop. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Logan Jones at pick No. 116 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Tacario Davis at the Round 4 slot is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A tidy bit of business in the 147th pick, where DeMonte Capehart graded well above the range. A need, and now a little less of one.
A conviction pick on VJ Payne at slot 187 that the board grades a round light. A minor itch, scratched.
Jeff Caldwell at the 209th pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They paid up for Noah Whittington at the 223rd overall pick when waiting would have done the job. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
