Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Commanders were there to profit. Kevin Coleman Jr., the No. 165 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 187th overall pick. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end. The Whittington pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 7th overall pick they get a centerfielder for the defense at fair value. More want than need.
Davison Igbinosun in No. 71 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Malik Benson in pick 147 is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Circle this one: Kevin Coleman Jr. at pick No. 187 is a fall that decides a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board had cheaper options than Jadon Canady at the Round 6 slot, and it noticed. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They went early on Noah Whittington in slot 223, and the value did not follow. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
