The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: Adonai Mitchell, the No. 31 name on the board, sitting there at the 73rd pick like a gift left on the doorstep.
They will need Limmer to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. It is not that Stover is a bad player; it is that the Patriots had louder needs to answer first.
They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
Nice patience on Joe Alt, who had no business lasting to pick 11. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Xavier Legette at Round 2, Pick 9 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A straight-up fair deal on Patrick Paul at the 42nd pick, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Adonai Mitchell at the Round 3 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A reach on Khyree Jackson in No. 91; the board had better options right there. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots to take Cade Stover, a TE-EDGE that was not the priority.
Beaux Limmer at slot 103 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
They paid up for Dylan Laube at the 129th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. The roster fit checks out.
Trey Knox in Round 7, Pick 4 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
No drama and no debate, Jeremy Flax went about where he belonged in slot 232. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
