You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Vikings did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. A weekend to file away and forget, and an F to match.
The whole projection now runs through Drake Maye; hit there and everything else looks smarter. That safety hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. McCaffrey has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
On value alone, King makes the weekend a net positive. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
There is no soft landing here: they fought the board and left safety open, and the grade is the bill.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.3
· Pick 3
· Drake Maye
· QB
· rank 5
In slot 3 they get the arm they will build around. The biggest hole, addressed.
R1.11
· Pick 11
· Olumuyiwa Fashanu
· OT
· rank 8
In pick No. 11 they get a blindside protector at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.10
· Pick 42
· Chop Robinson
· DE-EDGE
· rank 21
A top-tier edge rusher at a bargain, Chop Robinson in pick 42, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.9
· Pick 109
· Zak Zinter
· OG
· rank 104
A reasonable price with a little left over, Zak Zinter in the 109th overall pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.30
· Pick 130
· Braelon Allen
· RB
· rank 109
Circle this one: Braelon Allen at No. 130 is a fall that decides a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.20
· Pick 156
· Luke McCaffrey
· WR
· rank 165
Luke McCaffrey in the 156th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.30
· Pick 166
· Kalen King
· CB
· rank 140
Kalen King at Round 5, Pick 30 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R6.4
· Pick 179
· Trevor Keegan
· OG
· rank 162
They read the board right and Trevor Keegan was the payoff at the Round 6 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R6.15
· Pick 190
· Ty'Ron Hopper
· LB
· rank 177
A quiet steal in slot 190: Ty'Ron Hopper for less than the market said. A minor itch, scratched.
R7.9
· Pick 229
· Gabe Hall
· DL
· rank 214
A tidy bit of business in No. 229, where Gabe Hall graded well above the range. A need, and now a little less of one.
