The Eagles did not so much draft Michael Barrett as overpay for him, 29 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. With edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on DT-EDGE is the choice that costs them.
The Thomas Jr. steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 22 they get a lockdown presence outside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
The board fumbled Brian Thomas Jr. all the way to the 50th overall pick, and they scooped it up. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at the Round 2 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose DT-EDGE. Maason Smith in pick 97 leaves edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots for later.
Michael Barrett at slot 160 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
A slide stopped in the 170th pick, with Renardo Green worth more than the price. A need, and now a little less of one.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jaylin Simpson at pick No. 171 is the proof. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
McCallan Castles at the 178th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Josh Wallace slid further than he should have, and No. 240 is lovely value for the cornerback. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
