There is reaching, and then there is Jared Wilson at Round 5, Pick 1. The Patriots jumped the board by 44 and dared it to prove them wrong. The bottom line is a respectable B+.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. The Derek Stingley Jr. pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 8 they get protection for the quarterback. A real need, handled.
James Pearce Jr. in Round 2, Pick 4 is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Colston Loveland at the 67th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
J.Michael Sturdivant at pick No. 103 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jared Wilson. The roster fit checks out.
They took T.J. Sanders at par in the 217th pick, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They went early on Terion Stewart in slot 220, and the value did not follow. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No edge and no loss on Akili Arnold in the Round 7 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
