Somebody in pick No. 180 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Patriots sat still while Quinshon Judkins, the No. 83 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. More right than wrong, and a B+ to match.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. Every board in the league had Spraggins lower, and that gap is the story. Spending an early pick on linebacker with quarterback open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
No drama and no debate, James Pearce Jr. went about where he belonged in pick 13. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
In slot 22 they get a lockdown presence outside, reach and all.
Isaiah Bond in No. 41 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Tyler Warren in the 53rd pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Tyler Booker at the 64th overall pick is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jake Majors at Round 3, Pick 8 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Danny Stutsman at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Deone Walker in pick No. 96 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A safety of that caliber at the Round 4 slot is the definition of value, full stop. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Brashard Smith in slot 119 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A need, and now a little less of one.
A surprising call. With quarterback still to address, they spent pick 133 on Harold Perkins Jr., a linebacker they were not short of.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Bear Alexander. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board fumbled Quinshon Judkins all the way to Round 6, Pick 5, and they scooped it up. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Good price on Rod Moore in pick No. 200, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They talked themselves into Oscar Delp at the 218th pick, and the board did not agree. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Taking Jonah Monheim in No. 220 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Javontez Spraggins at pick No. 236 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The roster fit checks out.
They reached into another round for Jason Henderson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
