When a board-topper like Chau Smith-Wade slides to pick 203, you do not overthink it, and the Packers did not. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
Randolph Jr. has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.25
· Pick 25
· Tyler Nubin
· S
· rank 30
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get an enforcer at safety. More want than need.
R2.9
· Pick 41
· Graham Barton
· OT
· rank 50
They paid a round early for Graham Barton in the Round 2 slot, more than the board wanted. It fills a real need, too.
R2.25
· Pick 57
· Edgerrin Cooper
· LB
· rank 57
Edgerrin Cooper in No. 57 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R3.25
· Pick 88
· Caelen Carson
· CB
· rank 85
Nothing to complain about; Caelen Carson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.28
· Pick 91
· McKinnley Jackson
· DL
· rank 87
McKinnley Jackson in slot 91 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A need, and now a little less of one.
R4.26
· Pick 126
· Keith Randolph Jr.
· DL-EDGE
· rank 156
Keith Randolph Jr. in pick No. 126 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.32
· Pick 168
· LaDarius Henderson
· OT
· rank 167
LaDarius Henderson at the 168th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R6.28
· Pick 203
· Chau Smith-Wade
· CB
· rank 166
Taking Chau Smith-Wade in pick 203 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R6.41
· Pick 216
· Omar Speights
· LB
· rank 215
No drama and no debate, Omar Speights went about where he belonged in Round 6, Pick 41. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
R7.23
· Pick 243
· Blake Watson
· RB
· rank 232
Blake Watson at the 243rd overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R7.31
· Pick 251
· Demani Richardson
· S
· rank 254
They took Demani Richardson at par in slot 251, which is nothing to complain about. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
