You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Dolphins did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. Put together, it is a D+.
They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They are betting Jefferson proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
Ford falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and J.J. McCarthy at pick 35 is the proof. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A slide stopped in the Round 2 slot, with Darius Robinson worth more than the price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Christian Haynes at pick No. 55 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Value with a capital V on Kiran Amegadjie in Round 3, Pick 9, a genuine coup. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A quiet steal in slot 77: Kamari Lassiter for less than the market said. A minor itch, scratched.
Calen Bullock at No. 90 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Jalen McMillan in pick No. 112 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They liked AJ Barner enough to skip the value, taking him in the 158th overall pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jordan Jefferson in No. 162 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Marist Liufau in pick 164 is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They robbed the room for Sataoa Laumea here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The roster fit checks out.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Gabe Hall in Round 6, Pick 23. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
You do not let a linebacker like Jaylan Ford reach slot 241 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
