You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Steelers did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
Haulcy falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
Every board in the league had Wetjen lower, and that gap is the story.
If Sonny Styles and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.21
· Pick 21
· Sonny Styles
· LB
· rank 11
In the Round 1 slot they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
R2.21
· Pick 53
· Gennings Dunker
· OG
· rank 51
By-the-book stuff, Gennings Dunker at slot 53 squarely in line with his ranking. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R3.12
· Pick 76
· A.J. Haulcy
· S
· rank 50
Somehow A.J. Haulcy was still sitting there in the 76th overall pick, and they pounced on premier safety value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.21
· Pick 85
· Jadarian Price
· RB
· rank 61
Jadarian Price in No. 85 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.28
· Pick 92
· Antonio Williams
· WR
· rank 68
Antonio Williams at Round 3, Pick 28 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R3.35
· Pick 99
· Domonique Orange
· DT
· rank 73
Taking Domonique Orange in the 99th pick is close to grand larceny; an interior defensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R4.21
· Pick 121
· Malik Muhammad
· CB
· rank 103
Steal is underselling it; Malik Muhammad at the Round 4 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.2
· Pick 142
· Dametrious Crownover
· OT
· rank 145
No drama and no debate, Dametrious Crownover went about where he belonged in the 142nd overall pick. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
R5.21
· Pick 161
· Drew Allar
· QB
· rank 157
Fair-plus on Drew Allar, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.40
· Pick 180
· Marlin Klein
· TE
· rank 159
They robbed the room for Marlin Klein here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R6.3
· Pick 184
· Kendrick Law
· WR
· rank 196
A reach on Kendrick Law in pick 184; the board had better options right there. It fills a real need, too.
R7.2
· Pick 218
· Kaden Wetjen
· WR
· rank 231
Kaden Wetjen at No. 218 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.8
· Pick 224
· Landon Robinson
· DT
· rank 219
Landon Robinson in Round 7, Pick 8 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.41
· Pick 257
· Andre Fuller
· CB
· rank 242
Andre Fuller slid further than he should have, and slot 257 is lovely value for the cornerback. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
